Whether you’re an undergraduate on Montreat’s main campus or a professional adult taking online courses, we’re here to help you develop better writing skills which are essential for any career.
All writers struggle with some aspect of the writing process. To write well, you need to decide what you want to say, how you will say it, and who you are addressing. Addressing all of these points is challenging, but writing that addresses all of these points and is both creative and effective is what we call excellent.
The Montreat College Writing Program will pair you with a trained peer tutor to help you in several ways:
- Develop a clear writing process
- Improve the quality of your work
- Implement careful proofreading
- Recognize the value of peer review
We are not a revising or editing service, meaning we won’t do the work for you, but we will identify strengths and weaknesses in your writing and help you to improve your weaknesses.
Undergraduate Students
Undergraduates on main campus can visit the Writing Center in the Thrive Center throughout the week. While Writing Tutors are typically in the Thrive Center, you should also look for signs on the library front porch or at tables in the library for signs of “Writing Scholar Available.” Walk up to that person and let them know you need help! Writing tutors will encourage you during your writing process—from brainstorming to final concerns. See the Writing Center schedule below for availability.
Adult Undergraduate and Graduate Students
Montreat students who are not enrolled at the main campus have two options within our Writing Program:
- You are welcome to travel to our main campus location in the Thrive Center within the L. Nelson Bell Library. Hours are posted in the schedule below. While Writing Tutors are typically in the Thrive Center, you should also look for signs on the library front porch or at tables in the library for signs of “Writing Scholar Available.”
- You may email your paper for electronic review. Although face-to-face consultation is preferred, electronic consultation is often best for students who are not located at our main campus. You’ll normally receive a response from a writing consultant within 48 hours while the traditional semester is in session (beginning the first week of classes and ending the week before final exams). Requests received over the weekend will normally be answered on Monday.
Guidelines for Submitting a Paper Online
To submit, please send your paper to writingtutor@montreat.edu.
- Attach your paper (in .docx or .pdf format) to an email
- Include a description of the assignment in the message
- Include the type of help you need
- Include course (ex. EN 101) and faculty name
- Type of formatting required, if appropriate (APA, MLA, or Chicago)
