The FAFSA: Your First Step to Financial Aid

Montreat College Federal ID is #002948

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the most important step in applying for federal grants, work-study opportunities, and loans. Completing the FAFSA ensures you’re considered for federal, state, and institutional aid.

  • Eligibility: Most families qualify for some form of federal aid.
  • Grants: Students with exceptional financial need may qualify for federal grants and subsidized loans.
  • Student Aid Index (SAI): This calculation helps determine your eligibility for various aid programs.

Apply for Financial Aid

Federal Direct Loans are low-interest loans with subsidized and unsubsidized options, available by completing the FAFSA and MPN, with repayment starting six months after dropping below half-time enrollment.

Federal Perkins Loans are low-interest, need-based loans. Repayment begins nine months after you leave school or drop below half-time.

Private Loans are credit-based loans from private lenders that help cover remaining costs and require a new application each time you borrow.

The North Carolina Need-Based Scholarship (NCNBS) is available to eligible North Carolina residents and is determined by FAFSA submission.

Graduates of Montreat College who earned a 3.0 GPA or higher are eligible for a $1,000 Alumni Scholarship toward a graduate degree. The award is split across the first two terms.

Explore thousands of additional scholarship opportunities through these trusted databases:

The Federal Pell Grant provides up to $5,920 in need-based aid for eligible students who complete the FAFSA.

The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is awarded to students with exceptional financial need who also qualify for a Pell Grant.

We proudly support veterans and military-connected students. Montreat College accepts VA benefits including Chapters 30, 33, 35, and more. For personalized assistance, contact our VA School Certifying Official at va@montreat.edu or contact the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs at 888.442.4551 or visit their website at benefits.va.gov/gibill.

Note: Institutional aid may be adjusted based on outside VA resources.

Montreat partners with select North Carolina corporations and companies to offer a 10% tuition discount to their employees. (Here is our current partner list.) Ask your HR department if your company is a partner or contact us directly to learn more.

At Montreat College, our team is here to guide you through every step of the financial aid process. In alignment with Montreat’s Code of Conduct and the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA), our team follows the highest ethical code of conduct.

As an important reminder, you should apply for aid when you apply for admission. Many scholarships are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis!

Step 1: File Your FAFSA

Within two weeks of submitting your FAFSA, you’ll receive your Student Aid Report (SAR)—a summary of your information, including your Expected Family Contribution (EFC). This number helps us determine how much federal, state, and institutional aid you’re eligible to receive. Montreat College automatically receives your SAR and begins reviewing it right away to build your custom financial aid package.

Step 2: Receive Your Award Letter

Once your FAFSA is processed and you’ve been accepted to Montreat, we’ll send your award letter via email that includes a detailed breakdown of the aid for which you qualify. From there, you’ll simply log in to the financial aid portal through a link provided in your letter to accept or decline your awards.

Pro Tip: Your financial aid is applied directly to your tuition and fees. If there’s extra aid left over, you’ll receive that money as a refund.

Step 3: Maintain Your Eligibility

  • Attendance. Missing too many classes without proper documentation may affect your eligibility.
  • Academic progress. You’ll need to meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) each semester. The requirements of the institution are set forth in the College Catalog. If you withdraw before completing 60% of the term, your aid may be recalculated and a portion may need to be returned. Before withdrawing, speak with our Financial Aid Office to understand how it could affect your account.
  • Conduct. Any offense involving the possession or sale of illegal drugs during enrollment will result in ineligibility. View our Drug Law Violation Policy.
