Speaker: Kristen Edgert, Montreat College’s women’s soccer coach
Hi, I’m Kristen Edgert, Montreat College’s women’s soccer coach. At Montreat College, we believe success isn’t one-dimensional. It’s about who you’re becoming on the field and your co-curricular commitments in the classroom and in your walk with Christ.
Speaker: Dr. Robyn York, director of the faculty of science and human services and associate professor of exercise science
I’m Dr. York, director of the faculty of science and human services and associate professor of exercise science here at Montreat. The heart of the Cavalier Success Commitment is our shared pledge to academic excellence, integrity, and community life. Success here is about more than grades or accomplishments. It’s about showing up, giving your best, and honoring your commitments.
That includes attending class, engaging with professors, and being a reliable teammate in all areas of your student experience. Academic success means taking ownership of your learning, being prepared, participating, and growing in both intellect and character. We as faculty are here to support that through advising, resources, and mentoring. But it starts with you.
We talk about this with our athletes all the time. Academics come first. That’s not just policy. It’s part of the Montreat culture. We want you to thrive in all areas, but your classroom responsibilities are top priority. And that’s why things like class attendance and convocation come before athletics or extracurricular practices or events unless they’re otherwise approved.
The Cavalier Success Commitment makes it clear co-curricular excellence should complement not compete with academic growth. Montreat’s motto “esse quam videri” — to be rather than to seem — calls us to live with integrity. This aligns with values emphasized in the NAIA’s Champions of Character initiative: responsibility, integrity, and servant leadership.
But Cavalier success goes deeper than just behavior. It’s about building a life rooted in purpose and faith. You’re not just here to earn a degree. You’re here to become the kind of person who leads, serves, and flourishes. So whether you’re pursuing excellence in your sport, your music ensemble, your studies, or your calling, remember it all matters. It’s all connected. And you don’t do it alone.
Faculty, staff, and coaches are all here to walk alongside you. Read the Cavalier Success Commitment, know the expectations, and commit to being a full part of this community. Let’s keep growing together. That’s the Cavalier way.
