Rachel Toone: Sydney, first of all, where are you from and how did you end up at Montreat?
Sydney: I’m from Johnson City, Tennessee. Most people either know exactly what Montreat is or have never heard of it in their life, and I was one of those people who had never heard of it. I found myself at a soccer showcase, and the previous head coach actually saw me play and invited me to come to campus. I came for three different ID clinics and ended up falling in love with it. I was like, “Okay, God, you want me here, I’ll be here.”
Rachel Toone: I’m going to ask the dreaded question that seniors usually hate, but when we kick you off campus at the end of this semester, what’s going to come next?
Sydney: Thankfully, I actually have a plan! I start PA school in January.
Rachel Toone: Yes, girl! You’re just rolling right into it. Where are you going to go to PA school?
Sydney: Milligan.
Rachel Toone: Traitor! We’ll forgive you for it anyway. So Sydney, what is something that God taught you during your time here at Montreat?
Sydney: I feel like the biggest thing was just to be present. I feel like that’s hard when you have to think about the future and where you’re going next in life. But when you just take a minute to sit back and say, “Okay, I’m here. Let me appreciate where I’m at, because it will be gone quicker than you realize.”
So just being here and appreciating the people around you and the experiences you get to have— being able to drive your car to go to Cookout or Waffle House at 1:00 AM. Just different things that you take for granted or you don’t get to do later or earlier so, just to be here.
Rachel Toone: In that spirit, what’s a word of wisdom you have for students who are still going to be here next semester?
Sydney: I know this is the most cliché answer and this is what everybody says, but your time goes by really quickly. I’ve said that since the beginning of this year, but now with only four days left of school, it’s really here and it’s really over. Just enjoy your time while you’re here because it will go by fast, and you meet some pretty cool people while you are here. Enjoy the people you are around also.
