Concentrations

Make a real-world impact through cutting-edge research.

The Applied Biochemistry Technology track offers a personalized exploration of biological and chemical technologies tailored to each student’s interests. Students design and develop a research project that addresses a significant global issue, making a meaningful contribution to the field.

Unique to our biology program, student-led research begins in the sophomore year and is integrated into multiple courses through the senior year. This broad-based, in-depth research experience sets our biology students apart. Those focusing on technology can expand their research within the technology track, making substantial contributions to the field of responsible biochemical technologies.

Protect the planet and explore the natural world.

The Environmental Biology concentration provides a diverse selection of courses that prepare students for careers in biology, ecology, field research, and related fields. This concentration also equips students for graduate studies in disciplines such as biology, ecology, and botany.

Set in the Southern Appalachian Mountains, adjacent to the Pisgah National Forest, Montreat College is adept at immersing the student into the subject matter. In addition, the environmental biology track ensures a well-tailored education for any student.

Prepare for a compassionate career in nursing.

The Integrated Preparation track is a tailored program that provides students with direct entry into an Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program after earning their biology degree at Montreat College. This concentration integrates the prerequisite courses required by most ABSN or second-degree nursing programs nationwide.

Students can customize their biology concentration to match the specific admission requirements of the ABSN program they wish to pursue, accommodating the slight variations in prerequisites across different schools. Most ABSN programs require a 12-month period to complete a second undergraduate degree, but Montreat College incorporates these prerequisites into the biology major, allowing students to enroll in an ABSN program immediately after graduation.

Some Pre-Nursing track courses, specific to a student’s chosen ABSN program, may be taken at community colleges or online through other institutions. Approval of these elective courses is done in consultation with a Montreat College faculty advisor, based on the student’s research into ABSN program admission requirements.

Build a strong foundation for your next step in healthcare of biological sciences.

The Pre-Professional concentration offers a diverse selection of courses designed to prepare students for entry into biological and related graduate programs, as well as professional schools, including medical, veterinary, and dental programs.

Set in the Southern Appalachian Mountains, adjacent to the Pisgah National Forest, Montreat College is adept at immersing the student into the subject matter. In addition, the environmental biology track ensures a well-tailored education for any student.

Pursue your passion for animal care.

Montreat College’s Pre-Veterinarian program provides students with a comprehensive foundation in biological sciences, preparing them for veterinary school and related graduate programs. The curriculum includes targeted coursework and hands-on experiences that meet prerequisites and enhance application competitiveness for veterinary school.

Concentration electives are selected in consultation with an academic advisor, tailored to align with the student’s professional school application. While the concentration is part of the major declaration, it can be adjusted up until the final stages of graduation preparation.
