The Herpetology program is designed for students who enjoy getting their hands dirty and have a strong interest in nature. Students will explore the amazing world of amphibians and reptiles through a blend of classroom and field sessions. Encounter a variety of animals up-close to learn about the ecology and conservation of amphibians and reptiles. Students will have the opportunity to travel and camp to learn through field experience.

COMPASS 2026 will be held June 20-25, 2026.

  • 7:30-8:30 a.m.: Breakfast
  • 8:45-10:15 a.m.: Session 1 – Charismatic Herps and Keystone Species
  • 10:15-10:30 a.m.: Break
  • 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m.: Session 2 – Burmese Python Dissection
  • 12-1 p.m.: Lunch
  • 1:15-2:45 p.m.: Session 3 – Snake Behaviors
  • 2:45-3 p.m.: Break
  • 3-4:30 p.m.: Session 4 – Snake Behaviors
  • 4:30-5:30 p.m.: Free Time
  • 5:30-6:30 p.m.: Dinner
  • 6:30-10 p.m.: Evening Activity – Hellbender Search

Where You'll Stay

COMPASS attendees will stay in either Anderson Residence Hall or Howerton Residence Hall. Most rooms include two twin beds, two dressers, two desks, two chairs, two closets, one or two bookcases, and a private or shared restroom.
