Your commitment to Cavalier Success at Montreat College

Overview of Success

Living a good life begins with intentionality—with purpose-driven choices that shape our character, relationships, and pursuits. At Montreat College, success is built upon a foundation of mutual responsibility between students, faculty, and staff. Achieving excellence in academics and co-curricular activities* alike requires a shared commitment to upholding our values and fostering a supportive learning environment. As our motto, Esse Quam Videri—”To be and not to seem”—reminds us, we strive for authenticity, integrity, and wholehearted engagement in all aspects of college life.

Success at Montreat College depends on honoring your commitments—to your ideals, to your education, to our community, and to your goals for the future. This means fulfilling your responsibilities as a student by completing assignments, attending class, and meeting deadlines. It also involves being reliable and accountable to your professors, coaches, and peers, as you learn to be part of a culture of trust and integrity.

True success stems from a personal commitment to excellence, mutual respect, and the collaborative relationship between students, faculty, and staff. As a student, you are not just a recipient of education and guidance but an active contributor to Montreat College’s culture of growth, faith, and collaboration. Your ideas, actions, and engagement shape the community, and you are encouraged to share your perspectives and participate meaningfully in all aspects of college life. Success is both personal and collective—a shared commitment that strengthens the entire Montreat community.

*co-curricular activities may include athletics, music ensembles, research, events, student leadership roles, etc.

Academic Success

All students are expected to participate and engage in class activities. This includes attending class regularly, communicating with the instructor during and outside of class, participating in  meaningful discussion surrounding course topics as appropriate, and engaging with your peers during classroom activities/experiences. Academic excellence is rooted in a commitment to intellectual growth, personal integrity, and spiritual development. Students are expected to meet or exceed the academic requirements of their programs, developing strong study habits, completing assignments on time with honesty and integrity, and striving for continual improvement.  Faculty and staff are committed to supporting your academic journey. They can connect you with resources such as tutoring, academic advising, and workshops designed to enhance learning.

Co-Curricular Success

At Montreat, we do not confine success to the classroom. The college embraces a holistic model where academics, athletics, and co-curricular involvement intersect with faith to create a transformative student experience. Academics are imperative, providing the foundation for long-term success and intellectual growth. Athletics and the arts instill discipline, resilience, and teamwork. Co-curricular activities—those pursuits beyond coursework that enrich personal and professional development—play an equally vital role. These include leadership positions, student organizations, service initiatives, and internships, all of which offer hands-on experience and cultivate essential life skills. Just as a plane needs both wings to fly, academic and co-curricular commitments work together to propel students forward, each demanding dedication and excellence. True growth happens when students fully embrace this integrated approach, excelling not just in grades or wins, but in character, wisdom, and spiritual growth.

Montreat College also prioritizes community, recognizing its essential role in a meaningful college experience. Students and faculty gather for Convocation services and other events designed to foster connection and shared growth. The Student Handbook outlines both the expectations and opportunities of student life, reflecting the college’s commitment to fostering a supportive and enriching community.

Policy

Students are expected to make scheduling, attendance, participation, and engagement in classes, as well as convocation attendance, a priority over the following (including but not limited to):

  • regular athletic or non-curricular music ensemble practice
  • team or other co-curricular related activities (fundraising, community service, team-building, etc.)
  • work or other professional activities
  • institutional events, except as officially permitted in advance

Owning Your Collegiate Success

A successful academic journey requires a shared commitment—professors provide guidance, and students take ownership of meeting their degree requirements. Your success at Montreat is ultimately in your hands. Faculty and staff are here to support you, but it’s your responsibility to stay on top of your progress and take charge of your education.

Notice that these commitments are also in harmony with the Core Principles from the Student Handbook:

  • Each person is created in the image of God. As humans, we possess intrinsic value, a purpose for life, and are part of a larger redemptive story.
  • We are created to live in community. God’s design is for people to live in healthy relationships, not in isolation. This means we actively seek community where we know others, and where we are known.
  • Living with integrity is essential to fulfilling God’s purposes. The College’s motto “Esse Quam Videri,” means “To be, rather than to seem.” This means we continually develop our character, living so that our words and actions are congruent and trusted.
  • Freedom is to be practiced responsibly. Freedom is both a gift and a responsibility. It guides us to thoughtful, biblical choices in matters of behavior, entertainment, and relationships.
  • The educational experience is a holistic endeavor. Learning takes place both inside and outside the classroom. Each of the programs, services, and resources Montreat College offers seek to educate the whole person.
