Yesterday, Thursday, July 16, the Black Mountain Fire Department responded to reports of a fire at Abbott Hall on Montreat College’s Black Mountain campus. Upon arrival, firefighters observed flames coming through the building’s roof. Seven additional fire departments responded to assist in containing the fire.
While the building suffered significant damage and appears to be a total loss, no injuries were reported. Firefighters successfully contained the fire, preventing further damage to other campus facilities and neighboring properties. No one was inside the building when the fire began, and investigators are working to determine the cause. Preliminary indications suggest the fire may have originated from an electrical issue.
“While we are saddened by the loss of Abbott Hall, we are profoundly grateful that no one was injured and that the fire was contained before it could spread to other campus facilities or our neighbors,” said Dr. Paul J. Maurer, President of Montreat College. “We extend our sincere thanks to the Black Mountain Fire Department and the many neighboring departments that responded so quickly and professionally.”
Abbott Hall is home to Montreat College’s outdoor recreation studies program and houses classrooms, faculty offices, and equipment storage. The structure originally served as a bunkhouse before being renovated and repurposed for academic use. Following the renovation, it was dedicated as Abbott Hall in the fall of 2022.
“Abbott Hall was an important home for our outdoor recreation studies program, but buildings do not define our mission,” said Maurer. “We will move forward together, continue serving our students, and trust in God’s faithfulness as we determine the next steps.”
Additional updates will be shared as more information becomes available. College leaders are working to identify temporary space for outdoor recreation studies classes and operations while they determine the best way forward.
