Montreat College joins family and friends in mourning the passing of Claud Lee Efird, Jr., who died peacefully on June 20, 2026, at the age of 91.
A businessman, veteran, Christian leader, and devoted supporter of Christian education, Efird served on Montreat College’s Board of Trustees from 1979-1988, helping guide the institution through an important season of its history. His legacy of service to the college continues today through his daughter, Claire Efird, who currently serves on the Board of Trustees.
Born in Wilmington, North Carolina, Efird graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before serving in the United States Navy. He later returned to Wilmington to join his family’s business and went on to serve as Vice President of the Belk-Simpson Group.
Throughout his life, Efird was passionate about helping others come to know Christ. He played a key role in bringing Young Life to Wilmington-area high schools, helped establish InterVarsity Christian Fellowship at UNC Wilmington, supported the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and served as a founding elder of Christ Community Church in Wilmington.
“Claud’s life reflected faithful service, generous leadership, and a deep commitment to Christ,” said Dr. Paul J. Maurer, president of Montreat College. “We are grateful for his service to Montreat College and extend our heartfelt condolences to Lori, Claire, Katharine, and the entire Efird family.”
Efird is survived by his wife of 45 years, Lori; his daughters, Claire Efird and Katharine Shephard Sullivan; his grandchildren, Shephard Sullivan and Duncan Sullivan; and extended family members.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at Christ Community Church in Wilmington, North Carolina.
Montreat College gives thanks for Claud Efird’s faithful example of Christian leadership and service and joins the Efird family in celebrating a life well lived for the glory of God.
