William “Bill” Shipley, a current member of the Montreat College Board of Trustees and a longtime friend of the college, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2025, at his home in Charlotte. He was 93.
A successful businessman and visionary entrepreneur, Shipley helped found and lead several companies, including Shipley Enterprises, Incon-Therapy, American Direct Response Corporation, and Cordura Marketing, among others. However, his passion for service to the church and future generations defined his life, as he guided many young men in their faith and major life decisions.
Shipley brought wisdom and experience to the Montreat College board, shaped by decades of business expertise and leadership on boards of various organizations, including Fuller Theological Seminary, Youth for Christ USA, and the Board of Visitors at Davidson College, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Economics in 1954. Shipley also served faithfully as a Ruling Elder at Forest Hill Presbyterian Church in Charlotte.
“Bill Shipley’s commitment to Christ-centered education and mentoring young people made him a treasured member of the Montreat College community,” said President Paul J. Maurer. “He leaves behind a legacy that will continue to impact generations. His presence, wisdom, and friendship will be deeply missed.”
Shipley is survived by his children, Edward Shipley (Laurie), David Shipley, and Holly Devine (Tony), as well as eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Peggy Shipley (2015), their cherished daughter Janice, and his brother, Bruce Shipley.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Condolences may be offered at www.mcewenpinevillechapel.com.
