What's Happening at Montreat
Montreat College will be hosting high school students during two Open Houses this spring. All current students and professors can anticipate chances to greet guests as they explore campus and experience the activities, see the sights, and learn about the quality, Christ-centered education offered in our beautiful corner of the mountains. If you know any students who may wish to participate in an Open House, please invite them to either the March 26-27 or the April 16-17 session. Montreat College announced on February 22 the names of the two recipients of the 2010 Colonel Lee B. Ledford Awards for Student Research, given annually by the Appalachian College Association. The winners, Carla Porterfield and Todd Yancey, will receive $3142 each. Read More


On Tuesday, March 23, the Montreat College Friends of Music will present a concert by the Mountains of Asheville Flute Ensemble. The concert will be held at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Prodigal on the Montreat campus, and as with all Friends of Music concerts, the event is free to the public. Read More


"Electric Armageddon," a forthcoming episode of National Geographic Television's Explorer series featuring Montreat, Black Mountain, Dr. Bill Forstchen and the grisly realities of an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack on the United States will tentatively air on April 6th. Months ago, the film crew from Explorer came to town to shoot interviews and footage for a dramatization of what could happen in the aftermath of an EMP attack, and many members of the college community, town of Montreat and the Black Mountain community were involved in the project. John DeWitt who serves as a volunteer at Montreat College and is involved in other community activities, such as the Welcome Table and a member of the Parks and Recreation Committee for the Town of Black Mountain has been appointed to the Advisory Board of the one of the nation's largest professional organization dealing with experiential education, The Association for Experiential Education. Dr. Kimberly Angle, Assistant Professor of English at Montreat College, has just recieved word that her novel Hummingbird (Farrar Straus & Giroux, 2008) has just been selected as a finalist for the 2010 Children's Crown Award. Each year 20 titles are selected from hundreds of nominations for the award. This year's winner will be announced sometime in May. Read More

Montreat College’s Hamilton Gallery welcomes a series of watercolors by Fredreen Bernatovicz beginning March 1, 2010. The exhibit will run through mid-April.

For over a decade, Bernatovicz has painted both the grand and intimate landscapes of Western North Carolina. Prolific and award-winning, Bernatovicz remains driven by a passion for the outdoors and a desire to bring that spirit into the lives of others by creating watercolors that tell Mother Nature¹s magnificent story.

Thirty students in a marketing class at Montreat College in western North Carolina are very pleased to know that their efforts will help many families around the state and country. After a short-term business assignment led to over $1200 in profit, the class made a $500 contribution to the Ronald McDonald House currently under construction near the Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte. Montreat College is very pleased to accept a grant from the Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation, which will contribute $106,000 to the college’s Scholarship fund and is to be used for the 2010-2011 academic year. Read More



Current Spotlight
Montreat College and Montreat Conference Center are pleased to welcome Ambassador Andrew J. Young to Anderson Auditorium on March 22 at 7 p.m. for a lecture: “Faith and Civil Rights.” The lecture is free and open to everyone. It is the latest in both the Calvin Thielman Lecture Series that has attracted speakers such as Os Guinness and William Paul Young in recent years, as well as The Faith Series, which has included lectures from Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich on “Faith and the Founding of America,” and renowned scientist and Old Testament expert Gerald Shroeder on “Faith and Science.” For more information about the event, call 828.669.8012, ext. 3710.
