Dr. Lisa Toland serves as the Honors Program director and History department chair at Montreat College. She came to Montreat in 2016 and teaches Honors Foundations of Faith and Learning, Honors World Civilizations and the honors Great Books seminars. Dr. Toland values teaching from within the rich tradition of the Christian church and is always learning about “new” voices in the past that teach her and her students how to live better as people created in the image of God. She also enjoys teaching the History of England and the History of Christian Muslim Encounters. Dr. Toland’s research is on the family in early modern England. Currently she is working on a project related to siblinghood, death, and grieving. Dr. Toland is also passionate about women’s history and telling the stories of those individuals whose societal contribution have previously been unnoticed.

Dr. Toland came to Montreat from Indiana Wesleyan University, where she taught for eight years and also served as associate director of the John Wesley Honors College.

From Iowa originally, Dr. Toland is learning to love the mountains of Western North Carolina. She studied abroad in Oxford, England as an undergraduate at another Christian college and through that semester experience was encouraged to return there for her doctoral work, which she completed at the University of Oxford. She lived in the UK for five years. Dr. Toland is an avid Anglophile who enjoys hot tea (even when it is warm outside), Jane Austen novels, Agatha Christie murder mysteries and gardening. She is often most content when sipping a perfect cup of coffee and chatting with a student.
