Athletics at Montreat is about building character. Integrity. This focus stretches beyond fields and courts, ultimately producing more than stellar scholar-athletes. At Montreat, we develop individuals who are ready to rise to their full potential.
When we talk about college sports and athletics, we’re really talking about every student. Because every student at Montreat has access to our athletic center—not to mention the vast wilderness adventure land that surrounds us. Our facilities support 13 varsity sports teams and a whole host of intramural and pick-up games. When you’re ready to play, you’ll find something to do. McAlister Gymnasium (1954, later renovated) provides class facilities for health, physical education, and outdoor education classes, coach and faculty offices, locker rooms, a weight room, and a gym.
Newell Athletic Field (1982), with a spectacular view of the mountains, contains a collegiate baseball field that is literally carved out of the mountainside. Physical education classes and intramural sports are also conducted on this field.
Patricia Cornwell Tennis Center is a group of scenic, creek-side courts that are home to the men’s tennis program.
Howard Fisher Memorial Field (2011) is our soccer and lacrosse field on the Black Mountain campus. This field is dedicated to beloved soccer student-athlete Howard Fisher, an international student from Jamaica who set an example of Christian character and integrity on and off the field.
Roxy Hines Softball Park is also located on our Black Mountain campus.
The Black Mountain Campus Cross Country Course provides a diverse trail through pine groves, over creeks, and through open fields.

Asheville, Montreat’s neighboring city, was once named one of the “Best Outside Towns,” a title that clearly aligns with its local residents’ thirst for adventure. Being cradled in the Black Mountain range of North Carolina, we think it just makes sense to enjoy the beauty around us and join in that adventure. Our students are active, and many take advantage of the school’s BackCountry trips, which include whitewater rafting, climbing, skiing, and biking expeditions.
It’s no big surprise to see our students organizing their own backpacking or bouldering trips, taking a quick hike between classes, or getting a nightly workout at the Davis indoor rock climbing wall. Even if “extreme sports” aren’t your forte, we’ve got other opportunities through Student Activities like contra dances, stargazing trips, and coffeehouse concerts.
