Job Posting: Assistant Professor of Humanities (Bible-Writing-Faith Integration)

Summary

Montreat College invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor of Humanities to serve the History, Language, and Literature department, as well as the Bible, Theology, and Ministry department. The applicant should be well equipped to teach foundational Bible courses (typically Old Testament but could include New Testament); foundational first- and second-year writing; and Christian faith integration courses. Applicants should be prepared to engage frequently with students both in and out of the classroom. The successful candidate will become part of an interdisciplinary enterprise dedicated to fostering students’ growth in meaningful communication, critical analysis, and spiritual formation through the study of Bible, theology, English composition and literature, and faith integration. Montreat College is primarily a teaching institution with opportunities for research; the typical teaching load is 12 hours per semester.

Duties and Responsibilities

The candidate will be responsible for a variety of faculty duties, including several of the following:

  • Teaching Bible (typically foundational Old Testament, three sections each academic year, 0.375 FTE)
  • Teaching English Composition I & II (three sections each academic year, 0.375 FTE)
  • Teaching three 2-credit sections of Christian Faith Integration courses (foundational and capstone, 0.25 FTE)
  • Advising students and possibly supervising student research projects
  • Participating in faculty committees
  • Other duties as described in the Faculty Handbook

Qualifications

Successful candidate will affirm and support the Mission, Vision, Statement of Faith, and Community Life Covenant of Montreat College.

The successful candidate will also demonstrate support for Christian liberal arts education and the specific ability to integrate faith and Christian discipline in a compelling, thoughtful manner. Teaching excellence and a willingness to serve the broader college community through service and committee work are also expected.

Education/Experience

Doctorate in either Bible/Theology/Ministry or English/Writing, with at least 18 graduate hours (Masters degree preferred) in the other area. MFA acceptable as terminal degree for Writing. College-level teaching experience preferred in both areas.

Supervisor

Position will report to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
