Summary

The Director of Athletics (AD) is a member of the President’s Executive Leadership Team, reporting to the Vice President for Enrollment Management. The AD is expected to affirm, model, and cultivate the Christ-centered mission of Montreat College. The AD provides administrative direction and oversight for all aspects of the intercollegiate athletic department, which includes, but is not limited to, fiscal responsibility, identifying/recruiting of qualified personnel, strategic planning, public relations, marketing, fundraising, and general day-to-day operations. The AD will serve on institutional committees/councils as assigned. The AD will have knowledge of, oversee, and comply with all rules and regulations set forth by the NAIA, the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC), and Montreat College.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Provide leadership to ensure that all athletic programs are rooted in the Christ-centered mission of Montreat College.
  2. Create and maintain an environment where the student athletes’ well-being is top priority including academic eligibility, progress toward graduation, and the integration of student-athletes into the campus community.
  3. Provide leadership to ensure the highest standards of integrity in academic, financial, and business matters.
  4. Ensure the excellence of the athletic department’s overall day-to-day operation.
  5. Act as the official representative of the college’s athletic department to all external athletic agencies.
  6. Ensure that the athletic department has a highly competent administrative, coaching, and support staff.
  7. Ensure opportunities for community involvement, partnerships, and service initiatives.
  8. Establish and ensure success of department goals and assessment including but not limited to academic achievement, recruiting and retention goals, and post-season success.
  9. Coordinate team goals with each team’s head coach.
  10. Monitor control of the department budget and approve all purchase orders, check requests and p-card reconciliations.
  11. Oversee the athletic training staff and the training room operations.
  12. Assist with scheduling of non-conference contests.
  13. Be present at home athletic contests, assigning other “administrators on duty” when not able to attend.
  14. Assist with the hiring and supervising of student workers.
  15. Work closely with the Sports Information Director to ensure positive publicity of the athletics department.
  16. Supervise and schedule necessary staff meetings.
  17. Coordinate efforts to grow and enrich the Montreat College Athletic Hall of Fame.
  18. Provide oversight for NAIA and AAC rule compliance.
  19. Assign and communicate regularly with the AAC Student Athlete Advisory Council representative.
  20. Represent the athletic department with appropriate college committees.
  21. Provide for professional growth opportunities for the athletic staff.
  22. Strengthen and grow the Cavalier Court of Excellence event.
  23. Strengthen and grow the Bob Watt Memorial Golf Tournament.
  24. Approve all offers of athletic grant-in-aid to maintain assigned discount rate.
  25. Assist with annual roster goals, budget goals, and scholarship limits.
  26. Attend and participate in all Executive Leadership Team retreats.
  27. Meet regularly with the Faculty Athletic Representative to strengthen policies and systems between athletics and academics.
  28. Complete annual EADA and NAIA ROA reports.
  29. Perform other duties as assigned by the VPEM.

Required Qualifications

  1. Candidates must affirm and support the college’s Faith Statement and Community Life Covenant.
  2. Must hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college/university; master’s degree preferred.
  3. Proof of successful administrative and/or coaching leadership for a minimum of six years.
  4. Knowledge of NAIA and AAC rules and regulations.
  5. Demonstrated commitment to the academic success of student athletes with emphasis on graduation success.
  6. Must communicate effectively through public speaking and writing.
  7. Ability to accurately prepare and maintain records and reports.
  8. Strong collaboration skills
