Positions Available
For the summer of 2019 we have 5 paid positions available. We are seeking qualified candidates for the following positions:
- Field Instructor (4 positions available)
- Logistics Specialist (1 position available)
- MYLES Intern (1 position available): This is an unpaid internship, but housing and meal stipend are included
Summer 2019 Important Dates
- Staff Training- June 5 – 14
- Week 1: June 16 – 21
- Week 2: June 23 – 28
- Week 3 – Off for 4th of July
- Week 4: July 7 – 12
- Week 5: July 14 – 19
- Week 6: July 21 – 26
- Summer Closing, Clean-Up, & Debrief- July 27/28
Compensation
- $2300 stipend (paid out monthly in 2 installments)
- Free Housing during summer employment period- from Staff Training-through Final debrief/clean-up (TBD)
- $250 toward WFR or WFA training (if you need it for this summer)
- Weeklong field based training covering field risk management & leadership
- On-going training and mentorship
- Amazing outdoor gear & equipment instructional supplies
- The week of the 4th of July off
Primary Duties
- Lead weeklong backpacking trips during the summer under the supervision of the MYLES Director
- Help students conduct research in Biology and Ecology
- Assist with data collection for MYLES of Science research
- Conduct student intake in a professional, clear, and organized way
- Engage MYLES participants during down times
- Pack and organize backpacking and citizen science equipment as well as pack MYLES van & trailer for summer programming
- Serve as primary point of contact for trip participants in the field
- Communicate with MYLES Directors
- Uphold MYLES and Montreat College policies and procedures and apply safe practices
- Organize and clean outdoor equipment between and after trips
- Perform equipment maintenance and log activity
- Perform wilderness first aid as needed
- Attend required staff meetings and trainings
Assist with
- Marketing of program during academic school year
- Presenting research findings at conference, if possible
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Strong belief in providing a quality and safe outdoor learning experience to MYLES of Science participants
- Experience with outdoor recreation activities (primarily backpacking and hiking)
- Strong interest in learning Biology, Ecology, and Natural Sciences lessons to teach to students
- Experience with outdoor trips lasting seven days or more is a plus
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (primarily Word, Excel, & PowerPoint)
- High-quality written and oral communication skills, including the ability to understand and articulate policy and procedures
- Excellent organizational skills
- Ability to set and meet deadlines
- Ability to prioritize and manage several projects at one time
- Ability and desire to work collaboratively with others to accomplish goals
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and be flexible
- Balance of a professional attitude while having fun
