President Paul J. Maurer announced John Truschel has agreed to serve as Montreat College’s next Vice President for Finance and Administration. This position serves as the college’s chief financial officer.
Truschel brings a rich background of executive leadership, research and strategy, and leadership in investments and finance. Most recently, He served as Executive Vice President for Finance and Business Development (chief financial officer) at Gordon College in Wenham, MA, one of Montreat College’s sister institutions in the CCCU (Council for Christian Colleges and Universities). At Gordon, Truschel directed all financial matters for the college, including a $55M budget and $80M endowment. He was also charged with creating business development opportunities to create auxiliary revenue for the college. He oversaw campus police, technology services, physical plant, campus planning, purchasing, and the mailroom.
“John is an outstanding leader and strategic thinker who will provide oversight of the college’s finances and help the college develop new revenue streams and opportunities to advance the college,” said Maurer. “I am delighted to welcome John into this new role and look forward to seeing him build upon the success the college has experienced in recent years.”
Prior to his service at Gordon, Truschel had a long career in investment leadership. For nearly a dozen years, he worked for The Boston Company Asset Management, where he served as Executive Vice President and Global Head of Investment Strategy. During his years at The Boston Company, Truschel managed nearly 100 investment professionals and a budget of nearly $100M. He is skilled at utilizing research and optimization tools. Prior to his tenure at The Boston Company, he worked for Standish Mellon Asset Management, The Tower Group, Fidelity Investments Institutional Services, and Federated Investors.

Truschel earned his B.A. in history and religion from Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA, and his MBA with a concentration in finance from the University of Pittsburgh. He is also a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) and serves as an elder at Center Grace Church (PCA). John and his wife Laurie have three adult children and one grandchild.
John’s first day at Montreat was January 6.
