Montreat College will celebrate Spring Commencement exercises at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, in Montreat’s Anderson Auditorium. The college welcomes Dr. J. Howard Edington, former senior minister at First Presbyterian Church of Orlando and current member of the Montreat College Board of Trustees, as the keynote speaker for commencement.

Beginning in 1982, Dr. Edington served for 21 years as senior minister of the six thousand member First Presbyterian Church of Orlando, one of the largest mainline churches in the United States. Under his leadership, the congregation quadrupled in size, and Dr. Edington’s sermons were televised weekly to millions of homes throughout Florida and Georgia. Since his career at First Presbyterian, he has pastored Providence Presbyterian Church in Hilton Head Island, S.C., Central Presbyterian Church on the Upper East Side of New York City, and Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church in Houston, Texas. Dr. Edington served from 1992-2002 on the Montreat College Board of Trustees, nine of those years as chair. In 2018, he returned to service on Montreat College’s board. He has been awarded honorary doctorates by Arkansas College, Rhodes College, Presbyterian College, Florida Christian University, and Grove City College.

Montreat College will recognize 90 students completing undergraduate, graduate, and associate degrees in the 2018-19 academic year. Rachel Lynn Eddings, School of Adult and Graduate Studies graduate, and Josa Marie Worthy, School of Arts and Sciences graduate, will give addresses to their class.
