Two Montreat College Students Awarded Ledford Scholarships

Montreat College announced today that two students, Ben Jakobowski and Jessica Evans, were awarded Ledford Scholarships by the Appalachian College Association (ACA). The award will fund their summer research project with Environmental Science faculty member Joshua Holbrook. The project will inventory reptiles and amphibians in a specific region of the Southern Appalachian Mountains, filling a significant gap in the understanding of this ecosystem.

“We are very proud of our students and the work they will undertake over the summer,” said Montreat College Vice President for Academics Greg Kerr. “This project would not have been possible without the mentorship of Environmental Science Instructor Joshua Holbrook, whose work in this field has been published in scientific journals and whose infectious passion for this subject has led to television appearances on National Geographic, The Travel Channel, and The Weather Channel.”

The Ledford Scholarship, named for Colonel Lee B. Ledford offers financial assistance for summer research by ACA students in the fields of laboratory and field work, interviews, analyzing special collections, and participant observation.
