Montreat College announced today that Dr. David Bruce, longtime executive assistant to Rev. Billy Graham and Montreat College board member since 2015, has been named the college’s new Board of Trustees chair. Also, Rev. Dr. Howard Edington, former senior minister of First Presbyterian Church of Orlando and former Montreat College board chair, has re-joined the college’s board.
“We are excited to welcome David Bruce as our new board chair,” said outgoing Board Chair William Haynes ’85, who will continue to serve on the board. “He has been a pleasure to work with over the past couple of years, and his governance experience and passion for the college’s mission make him an ideal leader for the board during Montreat College’s next phase of growth.”
“I’m deeply thankful to William Haynes for his outstanding service as board chair these past three years. The chair-president relationship is extremely important to making wise and healthy progress, and William has modeled how a board chair should function,” said Montreat College President Paul J. Maurer. “Likewise, I’m thankful to David Bruce for his willingness to step into this crucial leadership role. David brings tremendous experience and understanding to the role, and I’m excited to work more closely together.”
Dr. David Bruce has served as executive assistant to Rev. Billy Graham for the past 18 years. He also serves as president of Graham’s Blue Ridge Broadcasting ministry and has been a part of Graham’s ministries for over 25 years. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Wake Forest University and his M.Div. and D.Min. from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Dr. Bruce has previously served on the boards of the Mission Hospital Foundation and Asheville Christian Academy, and he currently serves on the boards of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. He currently resides in Black Mountain, N.C., with his wife, Kerri, and daughter, Rachel.
“I am thankful to Montreat College and my fellow trustees for the opportunity to serve as board chair,” said Dr. Bruce. “In my time on the Montreat College board I have witnessed incredible progress, and I am excited to work with President Maurer and the rest of the college leadership to keep the momentum going and see what God has in store for the college in the coming years.”
Rev. Dr. Howard Edington was pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Orlando, Florida’s largest Presbyterian church, for 21 years before retiring from pulpit ministry in 2003. His books include “Downtown Church: The Heart of the City” (1996) and his latest “The Forgotten Man of Christmas: Joseph’s Story” (2010). Dr. Edington previously served on Montreat College’s Board of Trustees from 1991-2003, and was board chair from 1995-2002. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., his M.Div. in Louisville, Ky., completed post-graduate New Testament study at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, and earned a degree in church history from Oxford University. He and his wife, Trisha, currently live in Montreat.
“Dr. Edington has long been a great friend of Montreat College, and we are pleased to welcome him back to our board,” said President Maurer. “His addition, along with David Bruce’s leadership, will only serve to strengthen the unity and effectiveness which already exist on the board.”
