On Monday, April 15, 2013, two bombs went off within a few hundred yards of the finish line of the Boston Marathon, killing three and wounding over 100 others. In an effort to respond to the tragedy, Montreat College’s Cross Country team invites the community to pray, support the Boston One Fund, and participate in a race in July to raise money for the victims.

As a long-distance runner and cross country coach at Montreat College, Justin Herbert immediately responded to the event. As part of a large running community, Herbert had over 30 friends who participated in the race. He quickly began finding ways for the Montreat College community to help. Herbert shared, “The scene was devastating as one of the most recognized sporting events in America was transformed into one of the most horrific events of our era. In the same way that people remember where they were when the Challenger exploded or on 9/11, people will forever talk of where they were when the bombs went off in Boston.”

Herbert and the Cavaliers team encourage the community to pray without ceasing for those directly impacted by this act of terror. In addition, they invite the community to give to Boston’s One Fund.

Boston’s One Fund was established by the governor of Massachusetts and the mayor of Boston and is the primary charity set up to take donations intended to directly support the victims. These donations will go primarily towards paying the extensive medical bills of the victims, as well as paying for things like prosthetic limbs and physical rehabilitation.

Coach Herbert and the Cross Country program plan to put on a race on July 12 to raise money for the Boston One Fund. Coach Herbert said in response to the tragedy, “While we may never fully understand the rationale behind the attacks, we can be certain that the Boston Marathon itself will never be the same. We will continue to seek ways to remember, honor, and support the victims of the attacks at Boston.”
