Continuing the forward momentum of the Cavaliers track team, Junior Winston Rheinbolt qualified for the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, April 27 after finishing fifth overall in Nashville’s Country Music Marathon. Rheinbolt, who qualified for the championships in 2011 as well, ran a personal best time of 2:45:14, shaving almost five minutes off his previous personal best of 2:49:59.

Fighting through the cold and rainy conditions, Rheinbolt navigated a challenging course up-and-down the streets of Nashville to become the Cavaliers first national qualifier of the season. “Winston ran a great race today,” explains Coach Herbert. “He came back to us this semester after taking more than a year off to serve our country in the Air Force, and he’s worked harder than ever before.” Herbert said Rheinbolt was injured at the beginning of the semester and they struggled to get him healthy enough to train. Rheinbolt has only been running workouts and mileage of any quality for six weeks, so Herbert thinks he could get even stronger between now and the championships.

Rheinbolt had similar things to say about his training and his strength: “The first ten weeks back was rehab and very little running. It wasn’t until spring break that I got my first sixty-mile-week in, but Coach’s training helped me qualify again with roughly six weeks of good work.”

The 62nd Annual Men’s Outdoor Track and Field National Championships take place May 23-25 at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, IN.
