The board of the Friends of Music, an auxiliary organization of the College dedicated to providing musical opportunities to Montreat College students and the community, unanimously decided to name the Friends of Music Scholarship in honor of Dr. Eunice Stackhouse, a long-time music professor at Montreat College. The board seeks to demonstrate its deep appreciation for her many years of able and dedicated service to Montreat College’s music program.

Dr. Stackhouse has been on the music faculty of Montreat College since 1996. She loves Montreat College and its students, and has given many extra hours above her regular teaching schedule recruiting new music students and encouraging those already at Montreat. It is no surprise that Montreat students have thrived under her patient guidance. Dr. Stackhouse is an excellent pianist and has given many performances at the College and throughout the area. She was most influential in the inauguration of the Friends of Music Scholarship competition, first held in April 2003, and has been the primary person responsible for organizing and promoting the competition each year thereafter.

Dr. Stackhouse has performed extensively in both solo and chamber recital settings, and has adjudicated for many organizations. She has presented lecture-recitals at numerous conferences, including the Twenty-Fourth National Conference of the Society for American Music, Scripps College Symposium on Women in Music, and the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the College Music Society. Her solo piano recitals have been recorded and broadcast by WQED-Pittsburgh and Radio Kansas.

Dr. Stackhouse received the David L. Parks Distinguished Professor Award in 2006 and the Jack Crawford Advancement Award in 2001, and has also received two Faculty Scholarship Grants. She is listed in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, Marquis Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who of American Women, and Who’s Who in American Education. It is with great honor and appreciation that the Board names the music scholarship after this incredibly gifted and generous woman.
