Montreat College celebrated Spring Commencement exercises at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 12 in Anderson Auditorium in Montreat, NC. Montreat welcomed best-selling author Philip Yancey as the keynote speaker. Click here to learn more about Mr. Yancey and his book signing on campus.
Montreat College awarded diplomas to 152 students who have completed undergraduate and graduate degrees. Ms. Betty Jarmon, School of Adult and Graduate Studies graduate, and Mr. Jared Nielsen, School of Arts and Sciences graduate, gave addresses to their class.
The College awarded an honorary degree to Mr. Charles M. Zeiser, Chairman of the Board of Southern Champion Tray in Chattanooga, TN. Mr. Zeiser has been a long-time friend and supporter of Montreat College, serving as an active member of the Board of Trustees from 1981 to 1993 and from 1994 to 2006; he provided visionary leadership as Chairman of the Board from 1988 to 1991.
The College also honored two alumni with the Distinguished Alumni Service Award: Mr. Bryan Pillsbury (’75) from the School of Arts and Sciences and Mr. John Thompson from the School of Adult and Graduate Studies. Mr. Pillsbury has served on staff at Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA, for 25 years, currently as the Associate Pastor of Missions. He invests his time in the younger generations, discipling them in Bible study, in theology, and in church planting. Mr. Pillsbury has also done much work with indigenous church planting movements in places such as Cuba, the former Soviet Union, and the Middle East.
Mr. Thompson earned his Bachelors degree while deployed with the U.S. Air Force to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Upon his return, he was given an opportunity to become a commissioned officer and was appointed to the grade of Second Lieutenant in November 2004. In service to this great nation, he has received the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, and numerous other wards and decorations.
Montreat graduates and their families attended numerous events over graduation weekend. Graduates in the School of Arts and Sciences and their families attended the annual Senior Brunch on Friday, May 11 at 10 a.m. in Howerton Dining Hall. Friday evening, graduates attended the second annual Baccalaureate Service at 7:30 p.m. in Gaither Chapel. Dr. Leighton Ford, influential pastor, speaker, and leader, was the guest speaker.
