| Members of the women's
basketball team are optimistic and
looking forward to the challenges placed
before them this season. The
Tennessee-Virginia Athletic Conference
schedule is demanding and competitive,
and non-conference opponents, including
Western Carolina University, Wofford
College, UNC-Asheville, Limestone and
Cumberland University, will offer
additional challenges. The Lady Cavaliers have seven
returning lettermen and a strong freshman
class that could challenge for starting
positions. The seniors leadership
and experience should help the freshmen
get "established" to college
level competition. "Our returning
players are led by seniors Erin Broome,
Amy Harkleroad, Gina Granger and Lisa
Griffin, with sophomores Mae Jones and
Michelle Moore also returning. Tanya
Rowe, sophomore, who played in only seven
games before getting sidelined with a
season-ending knee injury, is returning
to bring more athletic ability to the
team," commented Billy Conley, head
coach.
Four freshmen are
coming in from successful high school
careers. New to the team is Crystal
Lingerfelt from East Burke High School,
NC, who averaged 13.0 ppg (points per
game) and 4.0 rpg (rebounds per game).
"She is an excellent passer and has
a keen sense of awareness on the floor.
Her shooting ability and unselfish nature
should be big assets to our
program," says Conley. Marti Keys,
from Kingsport Dobynbs-Bennett High
School, TN, who averaged 18.5 ppg and
11.5 rpg, is a versatile player who can
play post or step out and play on the
perimeter. "She is impressive with
her work habits and motivation to our
program," the coach said. Sis
Fourkiller, from Cherokee High School,
NC, who averaged 12.0 ppg and 5.0 rpg,
led her team to the first state
championship in her schools
history. "She has a never-give-up
attitude and an inner desire to keep
playing in adverse situations without
losing her focus," Conley said.
"Sis is a good outside shooter and a
floor leader with quality, effort and
determination. Abby Higley, from Panama,
shows a lot of anticipation and instinct
on the floor. Her work habits and desire
to improve will help in learning the
Montreat system and will help establish
her as a good player."
