Alum William Haynes Named Montreat College Board of Trustees Chair

July 2, 2014

Montreat College alumnus William Haynes (’85) began his service as chairman of the college’s Board of Trustees yesterday, July 1.

“I am both excited and humbled as I assume the chairmanship of Montreat College’s board of trustees at this pivotal time in the school’s history,” said Haynes. “As an alum and current trustee, I am aware of just how much potential there is for Montreat to become a leader in Christ-centered higher education in the Southeast. And I am looking forward to working with the board, the administration, the faculty, the staff, and the school’s newly elected president Dr. Paul Maurer to fulfill and enhance Montreat College’s mission and vision as it enters its second century.”

Haynes is the founder and CEO of Sabai Technology, a tech company focused on the development and sale of wireless network equipment. Before launching his business, Haynes served as a missionary with Youth with a Mission (YWAM) in Chiang Rai, Thailand for 4 years with his wife, Cynthia, and three children.  He and his family currently reside in Simpsonville, South Carolina.

“William has served the school well during his tenure on the board,” said exiting board chair Bernard Wright, Jr. “He embodies the term ‘servant leader,’ and he is exactly the kind of bridge builder the board and the college need right now.”

Wright is closing a three-year term as Montreat’s board chair, during which time enrollment grew by 15%, the college launched its first fully online programs, and it opened new campuses in Raleigh, Rocky Mount, and Morganton, NC. Wright has worked for LCNB National Bank for 37 years as the head of the Trust Department and the bank’s Investment Officer. He has also been an active community member in his native Ohio, serving on numerous boards, including Sinclair Community College, Project Excellence (a teacher rewards program), the Loeb Foundation, and the Warren County United Way, among others.

“We are incredibly grateful for Barney’s deep commitment to Montreat College,” said interim president Joe Kirkland. “Barney loves Montreat College, and he has poured countless hours of service into this institution. We are forever indebted to him for his sacrificial investment over the last decade.”

Wright will continue to serve on the Montreat College board as a trustee.
