Montreat College Group Completes 38th Discovery Wilderness Expedition

June 11, 2014

On Saturday, May 31, the 17 students and four instructors who participated in the Montreat College Outdoor Education program’s annual twenty-day Discovery Wilderness Expedition returned safely to campus. A concluding banquet with family and friends that evening followed a day in which the members of the expedition had walked or run all the way from Mt. Mitchell to Montreat.

“We rejoice in the fact that all 17 students who started the program completed it on Saturday, despite a few trips to the doctor,” said Outdoor Education department Co-Chair Andrew Bobilya. “More importantly, the instructors and students have shared stories of how their faith has grown during their journey in the wilderness.”

The purpose of the Discovery trip, which has taken place every May for the past 38 years, is to use an extended wilderness expedition in a small group environment to help participants gain a greater of both who they are and of God’s loving care for them.  It focuses on Christian discipleship, leadership, stewardship and community.
