Montreat College to Host Sixth Annual Creative Writing Festival on April 11

April 4, 2014

Montreat College will host its annual Creative Writing Festival on Friday, April 11, 2014 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event will feature writing workshops, conversations with expert faculty, and a creative writing contest in poetry and fiction. Dr. Jim Shores, associate professor of communication and environmental studies and award-winning screenplay writer, will present a screenplay-writing workshop. Dr. Bill Forstchen, professor of history and New York Times bestselling novelist and author, will engage in a dialogue with festival participants. Kevin Auman, director of the Music Business program at Montreat College, will host a song lyric writing workshop with a special guest lyricist.

The Montreat College English Department started the Creative Writing Festival in the Spring of 2008 as an outreach and service to area High School students.  McDowell, Owen, and North Buncombe High Schools have participated every year for the past 5 years.  The festival also draws participants from Christian schools such as Haywood, North Asheville, and ACA, as well has home-schooled students.  And over the years the festival has attracted participants from as far away as Maryland, Virginia, and Florida.

According to Montreat English professor and festival director Dr. Kimberly Angle, “My favorite part of the Festival is the Open Mic, when students ‘publish’ their work with their peers and everyone cheers and celebrates creativity. We yell and clap for sports and musical performances all the time, but at the Montreat Creative Writing Festival writing and creativity are the spotlight. And the lasting message we hope to send is that writing matters, creativity matters, voice matters–and that is a powerful message and one that we don’t hear often enough.”

Event registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. on April 11, 2014.
