Montreat College is set to expand its athletic department with the addition of men’s and women’s lacrosse while reinstating men’s and women’s tennis and adding women’s reserve soccer beginning fall 2014, Athletic Director Craig Jackson announced on Tuesday.
With the launch of the new programs and by reviving the tennis program, the number of Cavalier student-athletes will rise to over 325 at Montreat College.
“The addition of these sports is great news for Cavalier Athletics,” said Athletic Director Craig Jackson. “We look forward to the addition of these programs and their ability to aid in attracting quality student-athletes who wish to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level.”
The addition of men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s tennis will bring Montreat’s varsity sport offerings to 17 programs, which compete in the Appalachian Athletic Conference, (AAC) a member of National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
Montreat College will compete in men’s and women’s tennis as a conference sport in 2014-15, while the reserve women’s soccer will start for the fall of 2014. Men’s and women’s lacrosse will begin as club sports starting with competition in the spring of 2015.
