Montreat College’s Cross Country and Track program will host a 5K Run/Walk to benefit two organizations: One Fund Boston and Sole Hope. The run will take place on Friday, July 12 at 5:30 p.m. on the college’s Black Mountain campus.
Boston’s One Fund is an organization that provides assistance for the victims of the bombings at the Boston Marathon on April 15. Set up by Boston’s mayor and the governor of Massachusetts in the aftermath of the attacks, the Boston One Fund has raised over $25 million for the victims thus far. Those affected by this tragedy have expensive hospital and rehabilitation bills.
Cross Country Head Coach Justin Herbert, the organizer of the run, shared, “Even though we can’t erase what happened that day in Boston, we want to show our love and support for the victims.”
The Cross Country and Track program has hosted this race for three years, raising money for SoleHope, an Asheville-based organization that provides shoes for children in the country of Uganda in an effort to stop the spread of dangerous parasites that attack children’s feet. The parasites develop because the children are constantly barefoot. The funds raised will go toward materials the shoes SoleHope creates for the children in Uganda.
Half of the support raised will go to Boston’s One Fund while the other half will support SoleHope. “We’re excited for the opportunity to partner with two charities at once,” said Herbert.
Registration is $20. Registration for Montreat College students, staff and faculty is $10. Contact Justin Herbert at email@example.com to register.
