Montreat College Celebrates Spring Commencement 2013

Montreat College will celebrate Spring Commencement exercises at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 11 in Anderson Auditorium in Montreat, NC. Montreat welcomes Young Life President Denny Rydberg as the keynote speaker for Commencement. Click here to learn more about Mr. Rydberg.

Montreat College will award diplomas to 103 students who have completed undergraduate, graduate, and professional studies degrees. Laura Skillman, School of Professional and Adult Studies graduate, and Marta Hennigan, School of Arts and Sciences graduate, will give addresses to their class. 

The College will also honor Dr. Martha Guy ‘38 and Mr. Bill Loelius ’98, ’02 with the Distinguished Alumni Service Award.  Guy ran the Avery County Bank, a family business, for decades, and has served on numerous education boards and has volunteered with a multitude of civic organizations. She has been a faithful supporter of Montreat College for many years, and was awarded an honorary doctorate from Montreat in 2008.  Mr. Bill Loelius enrolled in one of the first cohorts of the School of Professional and Adult Studies, and now gives back through teaching in the program. He is currently the vice president of business development for Cube Six, Inc. Loelius is also a founder and multi-term president of Carolina Crown, a non-profit organization focused on developing excellence in young people through performing arts education. In addition to his full-time responsibilities, Loelius serves as an adjunct faculty member at both Montreat College and Strayer University.

Montreat graduates and their families are invited to numerous events over graduation weekend. To begin, graduates in the School of Arts and Sciences and their families are invited to the annual Senior Brunch on Friday, May 10 at 10 a.m. in Howerton Dining Hall.  Friday evening, all graduates are invited to the third annual Baccalaureate Service at 7:30 p.m. in Gaither Chapel. Dr. Stephen Woodworth, director of spiritual formation at Toccoa Falls College and former chaplain of Montreat College, is the guest speaker. To learn more about Dr. Woodworth, click here.

All Montreat graduates and their families are invited to the annual Graduate BBQ Luncheon on Saturday, May 11 at 11:30 a.m. in Howerton Dining Hall. The luncheon is free for graduates and $7.50 for family and friends. Click here to register.
