The Friends of the Library will observe National Library Week with a program featuring Montreat College alum Maggie Lauterer ’65 and her husband Zack Allen on Tuesday, April 16, at 3 p.m. in Gaither Chapel. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
Lauterer and Allen share a love of ballad singing and early American shape-note music. Lauterer currently serves as pastor of Montreat Presbyterian Church (USA). She is a graduate of Union-PSCE in Richmond, VA, with a master of divinity degree and work toward a doctor of ministry degree. Lauterer is an alumnus of Montreat College and UNC-Chapel Hill. She is a native of Western North Carolina and has had a successful journalism career in newspapers, magazines, and as a feature reporter for WLOS-TV.
Allen is a writer, poet, folklorist, musician, and former Asheville-Citizen Times journalist. His book, Eggtown and Other Stories, is a collection of op-eds and poems which explore his childhood and stories of the mountains of Western North Carolina and Asheville. As publisher under his own imprint, Folk Heritage Books, he has produced books of family history, genealogy, early music, and historical fiction.
