Montreat College Celebrates Black History Month

February 22, 2013

Montreat College celebrates Black History Month through numerous events and speakers in the month of February. Montreat College has its own part of black history: On August 21, 1965, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. addressed the Christian Action Conference at Montreat College.

Alum Jazz Cathcart ’07, director of the “I Have a Dream” program in Asheville, spoke to students in Convocation on February 11 about bearing each other’s burdens based on speeches and letters of Dr. King. On February 22, NAACP member and Hall of Fame inductee Mrs. Mary Peeler addressed the student body in a special Convocation. A film showing will close the month: on February 28, students will view “Blood Done Signed My Name,” a memoir by Timothy Tyson, and engage in discussion afterward.
