After serving nine years as president, Dr. Dan Struble and the Montreat College board of trustees announced today that Dr. Struble will end his tenure as college president effective January 15, 2013.
Following Montreat College’s reaffirmation of accreditation in December, President Struble approached the board of trustees about a transition in presidential leadership, and the board, in consultation with the president, arrived at a transition plan. Struble, who has served as president since 2004, is Montreat College’s seventh president.
Struble said of his tenure at Montreat College, “It has been an honor and a privilege to serve Montreat College these past nine years. I have been blessed by the trustees, colleagues, donors, students, and community members who have supported me in our collective efforts to live the Montreat College mission of Christ-centered education.”
Montreat College Board of Trustees Chairman Bernard H. Wright Jr. shared the board’s appreciation for the work that Struble has done. “We are very appreciative of Dr. Struble’s faithful service – thousands of students and graduates have benefited from his efforts over the last nine years at Montreat College. I look forward to seeing what God puts before him in the future.”
Over his nine years of tenure, President Struble worked hard to recruit an effective team of leaders who moved the college forward across many fronts, from improving administrative processes to launching new locations. Under his leadership, Montreat College expanded the Montreat and Black Mountain campus properties, established the Team and Leadership Center and challenge course, upgraded the Charlotte and Asheville facilities, and launched adult programs in Morganton, Raleigh, and Rocky Mount. Adult academic programs increased from three to ten, and fully online degree programs were initiated. The business and education programs’ accreditations were reaffirmed, in addition to regional reaffirmation by the college’s accrediting body. Also, President Struble worked with the Advancement team to vastly expand fundraising, tripling total giving.
The Montreat College board of trustees has named Mr. Joe Kirkland as interim president. Kirkland has been vice president for advancement for over five years and has excellent leadership and management skills, is highly trusted by all who work with and for him, and has been instrumental in the college’s record levels of fundraising and alumni participation. He has a master of arts in biblical studies, and he has a long history with Montreat College beginning with the matriculation of his son, Brackin (a 2006 graduate), in 2003.
