We offer writing services for every type of Montreat student. So whether you’re an undergraduate on our main campus or a professional adult taking online courses, we’re here to help you develop better writing skills, which are essential for any career.
You can write.
Don’t worry, all good writers struggle with some aspect of the writing process. To write well, you need to decide what you want to say, how you will say it, and who you are addressing. Writing that addresses all of these points is challenging, but writing that addresses all of these points and is both creative and effective is what we call excellent.
The Montreat College Writing Program will pair you with a trained peer tutor, called a writing scholar, to help you:
- develop a clear writing process
- improve the quality of your work
- implement careful proofreading
- recognize the value of peer review
Undergraduates on main campus have two options:
First, you can visit the Drop-in Writing Center (Room 105 of Bell Library) during the following hours:
- Sunday-Thursday: 6-11 p.m.
Writing scholars in the Drop-in Writing Center will encourage you during your writing process—from brainstorming to final concerns.
Next, you can work with a writing scholar as a classroom-based tutor. The writing scholar will review your draft, and then meet with you face-to-face to discuss revisions. At Montreat College, all World Civilization courses have writing scholars. Other courses may choose to implement them as well.
Adult Undergraduate, Graduate, and Professional Students
Montreat students who are not enrolled at the main campus have two options within our Writing Program:
First, you are welcome to travel to our main campus location in Room 105 of the L. Nelson Bell Library. Hours are posted above.
Next, you may easily email your paper for electronic review. Although face-to-face consultation is preferred, electronic consultation is often best for students who are not located at our main campus. You’ll normally receive a response from a writing consultant within 48 hours, Sunday through Thursday, when the traditional semester is in session (beginning the third week of classes and ending the week before final exams). Requests received on Thursday will normally be answered on Monday.
Guidelines for Submitting a Paper Online
- Attach your paper to an email
- Include a description of the assignment in the message
- Include the type of help you need
- Include course (ex. EN 101) and faculty name
- Type of formatting required (APA, MLA)

If you don’t receive a timely response, please email the director of the writing program, Dr. Kimberly Angle.
You can work as a paid writing scholar beginning your sophomore year. You’ll just need a faculty recommendation. Once you have that, you can contact the writing program director for details.
