Climate Awareness Program

Description: The Climate Awareness Program is a week-long program in which students will participate in exciting hands-on activities that relate to the sciences of climatology and meteorology.  Students will interact closely with Ph.D. scientists and natural resource agencies as they collect and analyze important climate and weather data.  This data will be collected at Mount Mitchell State Park as students hike to and camp at various collection sites.

Activities Include:
        • Visit NOAA's National Climatic Data Center in Asheville
        • Participate in exciting climate and weather research activities with Ph.D. scientists
        • Collect and analyze climate/weather data at various collection stations in the mountains
        • Hike & camp at Mount Mitchell State Park (highest peak in Eastern U.S.)

Program Dates:
        • June 15-20
        • June 29-July 4
        • July 13-18

Program Fee = $50

Water Quality Exploration

Description: The "original" CLIMBE Program is now called the Water Quality Exploration – a week-long science-related backpacking program.  The program will focus on FUN and PRACTICAL uses of science, and introduce students to field-based Environmental Science as an alternative to the traditional science laboratory.

Activities Include:
        • Hike & camp at Mount Mitchell State Park (highest peak in Eastern U.S.)
        • Collect and analyze water samples
        • Identify macroinvertebrates and salamanders
        • Investigate factors that contribute to stream health
        • Analyze data with assistance from Ph.D. scientists

Description: The Advanced CLIMBE Program will take students deeper into field-based scienctific research.  The program will include more intensive hiking and sampling activities.  Students will work directly with Ph.D. scientists to deisgn and implement a scientific research project.  Students will collect/analyze data and complete a professional presentation or report that will be shared at a regional science conference.

Activities Include:
        • Many activities experienced in the Water Quality Exploration PLUS...
        • Design and implement a real-life research project
        • Create a professional presentation or report
        • Attend and present at a regional science conference
