Visit the highest peak in the Eastern US (Mount Mitchell) and discover how climate plays a role in the biodiversity of this unique ecosystem.  You will learn about the plants, animals, and extrement weather conditions that make the southern Appalachian mountains one of the most unique and diverse ecosystems in the world.

Activities Include

  • ► Visit the National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, NC
  • ► Visit Mount Mitchell - then hike down 5,000 feet in elevation
  • ► Explore and compare 5 unique forest ecosystems
  • ► Collect and analyze plant, animal, and weather data from each ecosystem
  • ► Work with group members to determine the health of each ecosystem
  • ► Have fun, sleep under the stars, and learn a few things along the way
