Rivers - Canoeing, Freshwater Ecology, Water Quality

Paddle down beautiful mountain rivers and gain firsthand knowledge about water quality issues as you compare various aquatic ecosystems in Western North Carolina. Learn how to canoe as you travel a river and camp along the way. Explore and compare aquatic ecosystems along the way. Collect and analyze chemical and environmental data from each ecosystem. Work with group members to determine the health of each ecosystem. Have fun, learn a new skill, and experience science like never before.

Location

Rivers expeditions explore the rivers of North Carolina. The trips utilize natural areas including Mount Mitchell State Park, Pisgah National Forest and Linville Gorge Wilderness Area.

Participants

CLIMBE is designed for students in grades 7 through 12. No previous science knowledge or outdoor skills are required. Any student with an open mind and willing spirit will succeed at CLIMBE. A moderate level of fitness is recommended, as trips can be physically demanding.

Trip Fee

The cost of a Rivers expedition is $475. Register before February 15, 2012 and receive a $25 discount. The trip fee includes on-site transportation, food and lodging, camping gear, books and materials.
