Visit Mount Mitchell, the highest peak in the Eastern U.S., and discover how climate plays a role in the biodiversity of this unique ecosystem.  You will learn about the plants, animals, and extrement weather conditions that make the southern Appalachian mountains one of the most unique and diverse ecosystems in the world.

Visit the National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, NC. Explore and compare five unique forest ecosystems. Collect and analyze plant, animal, and weather data from each ecosystem. Work with group members to determine the health of each ecosystem. Have fun, sleep under the stars, and learn a few things along the way.

Location

Forest expeditions explore the mountains of North Carolina. The trips utilize natural areas and organizations including Mount Mitchell State Park, Pisgah National Forest, Linville Gorge Wilderness, Appalachian Trail, National Climate Data Center, and more.

Participants

CLIMBE is designed for students in grades 7 through 12. No previous science knowledge or outdoor skills are required. Any student with an open mind and willing spirit will succeed at CLIMBE. A moderate level of fitness is recommended, as trips can be physically demanding.

Trip Fee

The cost of a Forest expedition is $475. Register before February 15, 2012 and receive a $25 discount. The trip fee includes on-site transportation, food and lodging, camping gear, books and materials.
