The season opener for the Montreat College Lady Cavalier volleyball team did not go according to plan. Southern Wesleyan came in to McAlister Gymnasium Thursday night with experience and confidence, but the Lady Cavs did not go down without a fight. Young and inexperienced, the Lady Cavs kept fighting to make SWU work for every point they got. Sophomore Allie Baumgartner (Charlotte, NC)led the way for Montreat with 14 kills and 6 blocks, followed by frehman Natalie Neiman (Charlotte, NC)with 7 digs and 14 assists.

The 2008 Montreat Cavaliers Men’s Soccer season opens up with a 3-0 shutout of Emmanuel College. The first official goal did not take long to find the back of the net. Just seven minutes into the match sophomore Adnan Bangura (Freetown, Sierra Leone)finds an open net with assists from Sami Bin (SO, Porto Alegre, Brazil) and Shaka Bangura (JR, Freetown, Sierra Leone). However, that was all of the scoring in the first half. Again, just 5 minutes into the second half sophomore Ebrima Jagne (King E)(Foday Kunda, Gambia) takes a pass from Shaka Bangura and explodes toward the goal placing a low and out of the Emmanuel goalkeeper’s reach, putting the Cavaliers in front 2-0. Then with just 11 minutes left in the match junior Stephen Jackson (Melbourne, FL) nets Montreat’s third goal with assists from Adnan Bangura and Shaka Bangura. The Cavaliers hold off a late Emmanuel surge to maintain the shutout.

It did not take long for the Montreat Lady Cavaliers’ Soccer team to score their first goal of the season. Only two minutes passed before junior Lucy White (Northport, AL) netted her first goal of the season off a Heather Hable (SR, Stuart, VA) pass. Twenty minutes later, Emmanuel comes back to ruin the shutout with a, Lauren Moore, goal to tie the game at 1-1. The game would remain tied for the remainder of the first half. Most of the possession in the second half would be with the Lady Cavs and at the 31:38 mark, (Lucy) White would net her second goal of the game off an assist from freshman Brittany Zachrich (Hickory, NC). Charges by Emmanuel were shut down by some stellar Lady Cavs defense and a couple big saves by true freshman goalkeeper, Sarah McGuirt (Harmony, NC).
