Montreat's Lady Cavalier Softball team put on a season-ending show at the 2008 AAC Softball Tournament by taking #1 seed Milligan College to 13 innings. Milligan went on to escape the upset, 2-1, but not before Montreat demonstrated what tournament play was all about. Entering the tournament seeded last (#9), Montreat came up one run shy of playing for the tournament championship, which Milligan ultimately went on to win. The Lady Cavaliers won an unprecedented three games on Thursday to earn the right to play in the semi-final game against Milligan. Led by the pitching heroics of Shelby English who pitched all but one out of the 13 innings, and by Brittany Burns who went 5-for-6 at the plate, Montreat created the great excitement that is often found in tournament play. The Lady Cavaliers (#9) are putting on a great display of determination, as they are now one of the final three teams remaining in the AAC Softball Tournament. “I don’t know what’s in the water over here in Tennessee,” said Head Coach Katie Duvall, “but I like it very much.” Coach Duvall’s girls won three more games yesterday to reach the semi-finals. They defeated Bluefield 6-1, for the second time in the tournament, and in yesterday’s second game, defeated Virginia Intermont, 6-2. Both games had great pitching by Haven Payne and Shelby English. In the third and final game of the night, Montreat defeated Tennessee Wesleyan 6-3 to move into the semi-final game. Read More

The Lady Cavaliers fell today in the 1:00pm game of the first round tournament to Milligan College, 1-3. "Our offensive struggled against Milligan," said Coach Duvall, "unlike our first game, we just couldn't get our bats going. We had a hard time adjusting to Milligan's pitchers. Defensively, I felt we had a solid game." Senior Brittany Burns led Montreat at the plate, going 2-for-3. Montreat now heads to the lower bracket where it will face either Bluefield College again or the loser of Tennessee Wesleyan and Covenant College game.

Montreat lost a heart-breaker to the Cavaliers of UVa-Wise, 5-6. Montreat went on a six hit streak in the sixth inning to go up 4-2. However, UVa-Wise came charging back to tie the game at 4-4, before senior Cam Duckworth nailed a double to start the eight inning, and eventually score the go ahead run. But, with bases loaded and no outs in the ninth inning, UVa-Wise managed to score two runs to end the game and send Montreat to the lower bracket. Montreat must now play the loser of Bryan College and top-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan on Thursday, 9:00am.

The Lady Cavaliers defeated Bluefield Colllege in the first round of the 2008 AAC Softball Tournament, being held in Bristol, TN. Montreat put on an offensive clinic on Bluefield, winning 9-1. "I thought the girls played great today," said Coach Katie Duvall, "we now earn the right to play Milligan later on in the afternoon." Montreat and Milligan will play today at 1:00pm. They play for the right to move onto the second round. The AAC bracket is a double-elimination, 9 team tournament.

Montreat College was swept in a conference doubleheader at Union College on Saturday by the scores of 3-6, 3-9. In the first game, John Shannon would take to the mound for the Cavaliers and would pitch effectively into the fourth before being pulled for freshmen Seth Blevins and Brian Greene. Shannon would record four strikeouts and surrender three earned runs. The Cavaliers would make things interesting in the third as they would tie the game on a RBI double by Jesse Wise that would plate Brent Ashbaugh but that would be about as close as things would come in the first game as the Bulldogs would hit three solo homeruns in the game making the difference. Chad Dawkins would have a four hit game and have stolen base and run scored. Read More
