Frequently asked questions

Where is Montreat College?

One of the premier Christian colleges in North Carolina, Montreat College is located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. The scenic main campus is nestled into sloping woods in Montreat—just 15 miles east of Asheville and three miles from I-40. Additional campuses are located in Black Mountain, Asheville, and Charlotte. We currently serve students in seven locations. Find details and directions here.

Is it a Christian college?

Definitely. We challenge our students to integrate Christian faith, learning, and life. And we’re the only member institution of the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities in North Carolina. Read about our Christ-centered education here.

What does it mean to integrate faith and learning?

One of the primary books read by all freshmen who are enrolled in the class Foundations of Faith and Learning is titled Why College Matters to God. Authored by Rick Ostrander, it’s also a great read for parents of incoming freshmen. We believe it beautifully answers this question. You can read the first chapter here.

Is it affiliated with Billy Graham?

Not directly, although Ruth Bell Graham was an alumna and an honorary member of our Board of Trustees. The steeple and prayer room of the Chapel of the Prodigal are named in her honor, and the L. Nelson Bell Library is named in honor of her father. The Graham’s home is in Montreat. Billy Graham’s grandson Will Graham serves on our Board of Trustees.

What’s so special about Montreat College?

Montreat is no ordinary North Carolina Christian college. Our beautiful campus is in the cradle of the Black Mountain range, nestled in an outdoor-lover’s paradise. Here, students are valued, revered, and encouraged to play their special part in a caring community. Here, professors are experts in their fields—skilled teachers and willing mentors. Our community is close, and a Christ-centered education lies at the heart of everything we do. We believe that faith in God doesn’t stop at the pew—it extends into curriculums, onto the athletic field, and into daily tasks. Read our faith statement here.

What’s the size of the student body?

In the 2014–2015 year, our enrollment was 845; 385 of those students are enrolled in one of our undergraduate degree programs on the main campus. An additional 460 are enrolled in graduate and evening programs in our School of Adult and Graduate Studies.

What’s the student/faculty ratio?

Classes are small, with a student/faculty ratio of 11:1. Students receive personal attention that is not available at larger schools.

Is Montreat accredited?

Yes, Montreat is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees. Our business program is accredited by the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education.

What’s security like on campus?

Campus police is present on campus from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., and they patrol randomly throughout the day. See our crime statistics here.

What kinds of activities are available on campus?

More than 20 hiking trails are carved into the mountains surrounding main campus—perfect for weekend camping trips or day hikes. And our Student Activities program is staff-directed and student inspired. Events may include Max Patch star gazing trips, ski trips, sheet mazes, dodge ball games, coffee house open-mic nights, or music concerts. We offer an exceptional athletic program, and informal fun is always brewing—from ultimate Frisbee games to dorm socials. Service opportunities and extracurricular activities are plentiful. What is there to do outside of Montreat?

Just outside of Montreat lies historic Black Mountain, a small town full of old-time gift shops and family-owned businesses. A short drive on I-40 leads to the cultural mecca of Asheville, a place known for its exotic eateries, diverse touches of live music, and specialized storefronts. The Smokey Mountains are within a couple hours of driving, while the Pisgah National Forest borders Asheville and offers room for any outdoor enthusiast. Find things to do here.
