Mr. Kevin Auman
Music Department Chair, Music Business Program Director, Assistant Professor of Music Business
Recruited out of the professional world, Kevin Auman began teaching at Montreat College in 1999. Professor Auman holds a B.A. from Montreat College and a M.A. from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Born into a family of entrepreneurs, he started his first business, Solution Systems, Inc., with his brother and best friend in 1985 after his first year of college. A lifelong musician and composer, it didn’t take long for music to become integrated with his business. Over the past 20 years, Professor Auman has held many roles in the music production and media industry: He’s owned a recording studio;, he’s worked as a manager, partner, audio producer, engineer, broadcast music director, and production director; has managed concert promotion, direction, and logistics; has produced, directed and hosted nationally syndicated music programs; and managed record label distribution and inventory control.
Professor Auman is convinced that “innovation and an entrepreneurial spirit will always be essential in the music business.” Even so, he believes that this is not enough for success, at least not of the kind that has any lasting value. Auman points out that the entertainment world tends to encourage a self-centered worldview. By contrast, a life lived in humble service, attentive to the needs of others, truly stands out, “It’s the essence of being salt and light in the world…that’s the kind of success worth having.”
Dr. Eunice Wonderly Stackhouse
Professor of Music
Dr. Eunice Stackhouse holds degrees in piano performance from Indiana University (M.M., with high distinction) and the University of Kansas (D.M.A., with honors); and a B.M.E. degree from Grace College (summa cum laude). She’s taught piano and music theory courses at Montreat College since 1996, and was the 2006 recipient of the David L. Parks Distinguished Professor Award. Dr. Stackhouse formerly held adjunct or sabbatical replacement positions at the University of Indianapolis, Tabor College, Grove City College, and Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Stackhouse has performed extensively in both solo and chamber recital settings, and has adjudicated for many organizations. Her lecture-recitals have included the 24th National Conference of the Society for American Music, Scripps College Symposium on Women in Music, and the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the College Music Society. Her solo piano recitals have been recorded and broadcast by WQED-Pittsburgh and Radio Kansas. She was elected to Pi Kappa Lambda by the Indiana University chapter, and is a member of MTNA and NCMTA.
Dr, Stackhouse’s 1995 dissertation on the piano music of Louise Talma was published by University Microfilms Inc. (#9540200), and her article on Talma’s twenty Soundshots was published in Clavier magazine in 2002. She’s also edited some unpublished Talma manuscripts for Hildegard Publishing Company.
Mr. Timothy Wilds
Assistant Professor of Music
Mr. Timothy Wilds teaches in the areas of choral and vocal music. In addition, he is the Program Chair for the Montreat College Friends of Music Concert Series. Mr. Wilds earned a B.M. from Covent College and a M.M. with distinction in choral conducting and church music with additional studies in vocal pedagogy andperformance from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ, where he was a member of the acclaimed Westminster Choir under the direction of maestro Dr. Joseph Flummerfelt.
Before coming to Montreat, Mr. Wilds served as an adjunct instructor, choral conductor, church musician, worship arts director, music educator, musical theatre director, and voice teacher in community music schools, private schools, churches, colleges, and universities in Florida, Georgia, Missouri, North Carolina, New Jersey, and Tennessee.
While working at a school in St. Louis, MO, Mr. Wilds received several honors for his work with high school musicians. He was awarded an Outstanding District Director Award for the St. Louis Metro District by the Missouri Choral Directors Association; a Merit Award by the St. Louis Metropolitan District Eight of the Missouri Music Educators Association; and his high school choir was invited to sing at the 2003 Missouri Music Educators Association annual convention.
In addition to his work at Montreat, Mr. Wilds currently directs the Asheville Symphony Children’s Chorus; is a co-founder of Opera Creations, LLC (www.operacreations.org); and is the founder-teacher of Soundings Studio for musical, choral, and vocal training, the three ensembles/choirs of the Soundings Choral Group (Middle School Ensemble, High School Choir, and Women’s Ensemble), and Soundings Studio Summer Camps (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Mr. Benjamin Smith
Assistant Professor of Music Business
Strings/Cello/Music History/Music Business
Benjamin Smith, a native of Spartanburg, SC, holds a B.A. in Music and a B.S. in Finance from The Florida State University, an M.M. in Music Business and Entertainment Industries from the University of Miami and a J.D. from the University of Memphis. He is an extremely active professional cellist in Western North Carolina and the Upstate of South Carolina, performing with many orchestras, chamber ensembles, and in solo performances. His professional career includes work in business and the legal field.
As a former member of the FSU Irish Fiddling Ensemble as well as the Baroque Ensemble, Mr. Smith enjoys performing music of all kinds. Recent performances have also included ventures into folk acoustic music as well as performing in a cello and hammered dulcimer duo. He has an extensive background in instrumental church music and also plays viola with the Blue Ridge Orchestra.
Ben has over fourteen years of teaching experience including serving as an instructor at the University of Miami. He has a passion for teaching and believes that given the right teacher, any student can be successful in achieving their goals.
Dr. Hub Powell
Business Department Chair, Associate Professor of Business
Dr. Hub Powell arrived at Montreat College in 2005. He has also served as a faculty member at Lees-McRae College and Greenville Technical College. Additionally, he has served as a business consultant for Clemson University’s Small Business Development Center and as a production manager for Milliken & Company. Dr. Powell earned his B.S. in business management from Mars Hill College in 1985, his M.B.A. from Western Carolina University in 1987, and his D.B.A. in management from Argosy University (Sarasota, FL) in 2003. Dr. Powell’s research interests lie in the area of leadership, and he is currently working on research that examines Generation Y’s perceptions of effective leadership.
Dr. Powell has been married to his wife, Kathy, for 23 years, and they have four children. He is actively involved in his church’s youth ministry and is an ordained deacon. In addition, he has taught Sunday School for youth through young married couples. He is interested in politics, automobiles, and the shooting sports. He and his family have resided in Asheville for six years.
