Our Environmental Studies program is distinctly different, integrating a liberal arts education with a Christ-centered worldview. We also combine small class sizes with broad outdoor experiences—an ideal combination for learning.

You can learn in one of the most ideal areas for environmental studies in the eastern United States. Montreat is close to four major wilderness areas and several national and state forests—and our environmental studies program immerses you in the natural environment with an experiential approach to learning that’s Christ-centered.

We prepare our students to understand and critically examine environmental issues from an interdisciplinary perspective. You’ll be able to teach in various outdoor settings and engage in scientific research. Our program utilizes biological, chemical, and ecological course work and field experiences. We also emphasize career preparation and professional development through independent projects, teacher education, internships, and seminars. Our classes are small and foster interactive work. You’ll receive personalized attention—faculty members work closely with your faith, your interests, and your career aspirations.

Every two years, Environmental Studies majors hit the road for an intensive academic course called Ecosystems. The Ecosystems course varies from a trip to the Virgin Islands to a road trip to over twenty national parks. Check out this video, which was produced by a Montreat student, to learn more.
