A Christ-centered institution.

Cody Andrews, ’09

Cody Andrews’ love of literature and children led her to pursue a career in teaching English after graduating from Montreat.

She shares, “at Montreat, I had great teachers who set examples for the teacher I wanted to be.  The faculty was always pushing me to participate in writing conferences and competitions.  I believe their encouragement drove me to teach English as well.”

Cody graduated from Montreat College in 2009 with a degree in English with a concentration in Creative Writing.  After graduating from Montreat College, Cody worked as a summer youth ministry intern at a church in her hometown of Greenville, South Carolina.  She enjoyed working with the students, and her love of literature and writing led her to go back to school to become an English teacher.  That fall, Cody started a Master of Arts in Teaching English degree at the University of South Carolina in Columbia to teach middle and high school students.

Cody now lives with her husband in Spartanburg, South Carolina.  She teaches middle school English Language Arts at Spartanburg Charter School. She explained,  “The faith-based learning received from Montreat helps me keep in mind that the work I do has a higher meaning.  I don’t go to work each morning to simply teach English and writing skills.  I know I am also there to show compassion to my students, who may not get that anywhere else.  I want the children not only to grow as students, but as people as well.  Keeping my faith in mind, and striving to show my students the love that comes from Christ is a huge way of both teaching and helping children as I have always wanted to do.”
