We live in a technological world—even in the wilderness of Montreat. Our communication information systems program prepares you for an accelerating global economy. And you can study alongside a pristine mountain lake.
Computer Information Systems major
Our Computer Information Systems (CIS) program immerses you in the latest knowledge of information technology (IT). You’ll understand its application to business in a variety of contexts: the global economy, our society, and the environment.
The Computer Information Systems major builds upon our strong liberal arts core with professional training in computer technology, business administration, and quantitative analysis. You’ll develop infrastructure knowledge of:
- operating systems technology
Our courses teach you to maintain organizational IT systems effectively and to apply quantitative techniques to the design and maintenance of those systems. Classroom instruction is often augmented with outside technology speakers and computer facility visits. Additionally, all students complete a computer technology internship prior to graduation. These internships often lead to permanent employment opportunities.
Information security concentration
Money magazine rated a career in information security as one of the top 50 jobs in America. And the demand is high. According to a report by the Center of Strategic and International Studies, there are about 1,000 security people in the U.S. who have the specialized security skills to operate effectively in cyberspace, but 10,000 to 30,000 are needed. This concentration prepares you for the job. You’ll be able to design, implement, and execute information security mechanisms. Our combination of expert faculty and faith-integrated learning will prepare you for a career in this important, emerging field.

Internships are an important component of our CIS degree program, giving you the chance to make a positive impact on local businesses and organizations. Our student stories may inspire you.
A high school graduate of Shelby School District, Brian joined his alma mater as a summer intern and, based on his strong performance, was offered full-time employment with great benefits. Brian has since been promoted, and has plans for graduate studies in IT.
Jon continued working part-time after his summer internship with Dixon Hughes Goodman, a nationally recognized accounting firm. Jon is now in active negotiations with the company for full-time employment. Dixon Hughes Goodman is a great partner and supporter of the CIS program at Montreat College—and continues to seek our students to support their IT needs.
Steven interned with the Montreat College IT Department in 2011 to expand wireless coverage around our campus. He also added new functionality to our college networking infrastructure.
