At Montreat, we see American Studies as an avenue for critical thinking, exploration, and cultural appreciation. Our students examine American history, beliefs, and values—concentrating on how these elements inform a perspective on the larger world. As an American Studies major, you will come to a deep understanding of past political, social, and economic forces, along with the current implications of these historical forces. You will also be engaged by the fascinating movement and cultural shifts or people, commerce, and ideas within the United States.
A major in American Studies is an experience. We create opportunities for original research with specific facets of life in the United States, including its variety of subcultures. It’s also interdisciplinary, with courses in American literature, social institutions, economic development, religious life, political science, and other related areas.
