Our Accreditation

Montreat College is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award Associate, Baccalaureate, and Masters degrees. Montreat College is approved to prepare students for elementary education teacher licensure by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NC-DPI).

The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), a specialized accrediting body recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), has granted accreditation to the Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) program in the School of Adult and Graduate Studies at Montreat College.

Outdoor Education programs are accredited by the Wilderness Education Association and the Commission on Outdoor Education and Leadership.

State Authorization

The State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (SARA) is an agreement among member states, districts and territories that establishes comparable national standards for interstate offering of postsecondary distance education courses and programs. The primary objectives of SARA are to make it easier for institutions in North Carolina to provide online and distance education options to students in other states and to provide basic protections for those students.

Students seeking to resolve a complaint should follow the grievance process found in the Adult and Graduate Studies Academic Catalog, page 47. The Attorney General of the State of North Carolina is empowered by law to receive, investigate and work to resolve complaints that may arise against Montreat College or other North Carolina private, non-profit colleges and universities. It has been determined by the Attorney General’s office that persons wishing to file a complaint against Montreat College or other private, non-profit colleges and universities in the state can use the link on the N.C. Professional License & Certification Disclosure

In order to comply with U.S. Department of Education regulations, all higher education institutions are required to advise students as to whether their curriculum provides them with the eligibility to apply for a professional license and/or certification in the state for which they plan to practice.

NC-SARA does not deal with professional licensing board approval for any courses or programs leading to professional licensure. If you are not a resident of North or South Carolina, and you are taking an online course or program leading to professional licensure, Montreat College cannot guarantee whether the course or program meets requirements for professional licensure in your state.
