The Writing Program at Montreat College
Do you need help with your writing? All good writers struggle with some aspect of the writing process. To write well, you need to decide what you have to say while considering who will read your writing. Doing both of these effectively can be a challenge...not to mention the challenge of procrastinating.
The Montreat College Writing Program uses trained peer tutors, called Writing Scholars, to help you spend more time with your writing process, improve the quality of your writing, and recognize the value of thoughtful peer review. There are several ways to work with a Writing Scholar:
- Drop-in the Writing Center with any paper Sundays through Thursdays between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m.
- Work with a Writing Scholar as a classroom-based tutor in a Camaraderie of Writers course
- Email your paper to writingtutor@montreat.edu for electronic review within 48 hours
The Writing Center maintains a Christ-centered environment that supports each student's mastery of the writing process. We recognize that each student is the sole owner of his or her writing, and this recognition of ownership is essential in generating a responsible, constructive writing ethic. |

Montreat College proudly offers the Camaraderie of Writers Program. As a part of the program, some faculty members choose to use a Writing Scholar as a classroom-based tutor. At Montreat, all World Civilization courses have Writing Scholars as well as other select courses.
In a Camaraderie of Writers course, you will work with a Writing Scholar (a trained, peer writing tutor) on at least two writing assignments for your class.
Your involvement with the Writing Scholar will include the following steps:
- Hand in a draft of your paper to your instructor and sign up for a 30-minute conference time with a Writing Scholar.
- Meet face-to-face with the Writing Scholar, who has prepared written comments on your draft, for 30 minutes.
- Use drop-in Writing Center appointments to polish the grammatical issues in your final draft.
- Turn your final draft in to your instructor with a copy of the drafted paper that you worked on with the Writing Scholar. (This allows the instructor to assess the amount of critical thought that has gone into developing the final paper.)
The goal of the program is not only to give you a chance to improve your writing, but also to give you direct experience with the invaluable process of peer review and careful proofreading. |
To get help by email:
- Compose an email message and paste into the message the writing you want to have reviewed.
- Please do not send an attachment
- Include a description of your assignment along with the type of help that you need.
- Send your request to writingtutor@montreat.edu
- Expect a reply within two weekdays
Although face-to-face consultation is preferred, electronic consultation is also available to assist students not located at the Montreat campus, including students in the School of Professional and Adult Studies, or otherwise unable to visit the Writing Center.
E-mail your draft to a writing consultant at writingtutor@montreat.edu; copy and paste your paper directly into your e-mail message, and include a description of the assignment and the type of help you need.
You will normally receive a response from a writing consultant within 48 hours, Sunday through Thursday, when the traditional semester is in session (beginning the third week of classes and ending the week before final exams); requests received on Thursday will normally be answered on Monday.
If you don't receive a timely response, please e-mail Dr. Cathy Adams, the director, at cadams@montreat.edu. |
Montreat's Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) is a carefully designed course of action that addresses a well‑defined and focused topic related to improving student learning, and is a requirement for accreditation.
Montreat College has developed its QEP as a part of the Reaffirmation Process with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The college sees this requirement as an opportunity for Montreat College to enhance the overall quality and effectiveness of its graduates by focusing on an issue important to improving student learning.
In Fall 2007 the faculty considered several possible areas for improvement in student learning. By a large majority, the faculty chose to focus on writing proficiency.
By carefully listening to members of our community since then, the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) Team chose a writing across the curriculum program model called “Writing Fellows”.
The Writing Fellows model adds classroom-based writing tutors (Writing Scholars) to our already successful drop-in Writing Center program.
For complete documentaiton of Montreat College's QEP, please view our PDF.
