New in Hamilton Gallery - Welcome to Black Mountain

Holly Seddon's visual portrayal of six locations in Black Mountain reflects a multisensory snapshot of life captured in time. On display in the Hamilton Gallery, stop by and see this dramatic presentation inspired by study abroad in a small Italian town.

Welcome to Black Mountain

My name is Holly Seddon and I have been creating art my entire life. Art captures my opinions about humanity that I cannot express in words. There is so much to observe, so much to be involved with, that I try to capture each detail one drawing at a time. This past fall, my observations were broadened to Italy. For four months, my job as a student was to spend everyday drawing in the city of Orvieto. While I was drawing the town, I was to become aware of my surroundings: noises, smells, texture, and most of all getting to know members of the community. Thus my art is not just a picture, but rather a memory in time. Welcome to Black Mountain encompasses the lessons learned from my semester abroad. My exhibition focuses on six places around Black Mountain that are walked by everyday that I find reminiscent of Italy. I continued to use the same materials used in Italy: contè crayons and charcoal on pastel paper [11x14, 16x20, 18x 24] because the medium is expressive. The variety of texture and lines help captures the details in each location. Next to each drawing is a response that covers the experiences that occurred while I was drawing. Welcome to Black Mountain is my attempt to become involved in my community. I hope everyone enjoys the exhibition, but in particular I hope members of the Black Mountain community will recognize the beauty and unique characteristics our town.
